“The Third Gaze” by Andrea Giuseppe Corciulo
For more than three decades, I have been devoted to the question of how images come into being, how they are conceived, seen, and transmitted. In my current body of work, “The Third Gaze,” I open a dialogue between painting and artificial intelligence. What is crucial is that artificial intelligence as a design instrument does not take control; rather, I take it into my own hands as a creative tool, shape it, question it, and reinterpret it for my purposes. I employ it as a collaborator, as an assistant that enables unexpected visual discoveries. I am aware that creative processes are deeply influenced by the growing impact of artificial intelligence, raising many questions about the emergence of images and creativity. I engage with this new reality and attempt to process it through integration into my work, transforming it into a distinct artistic expression.
The starting point of these new images are photographs I take during my travels. They are fleeting observations at the margins of the path, inconspicuous places that would hardly attract attention in the rush of everyday life. Through the interplay between my snapshots and AI-generated additions, new perspectives emerge. The images are expanded, transformed, and reimagined. A dynamic exchange unfolds: on the one hand, the real situations I capture, displaying both organic forms and graphic structures; on the other, digital interventions that estrange, complement, and reinterpret these representations. My artistic intention remains intact, as I determine style, direction, and intensity.
In a further phase, I return the works to the analogue world. They are overpainted, layered, and interwoven. Painting meets spray, drawing meets photography, flashes of light meet slow stratifications. Rapid gestures alternate with tentative and carefully applied marks. Everything may flow in, everything can become part of the image’s formation. The modes of expression are intentionally diverse. This plurality is a conscious decision, as I impose no stylistic boundaries on this body of work. I allow myself to drift, to immerse, at times to sink into digital depths, only to redefine the surface in the next moment through painterly intervention. Worlds unfold that are as fragile as they are multilayered, filled with memories, signs, traces, and forgotten messages. Perhaps the images themselves reflect their process of creation. The tensions between harmony and rupture, between control and surrender, shape my entire oeuvre. My aim is to bring opposites together and dissolve boundaries.
The exhibition does not present only this current body of work. Selected works from earlier phases are also integrated, revealing how I have worked in cycles for over 30 years. Each thematic exploration leads to an independent body of work that, after intensive engagement, reaches completion and opens the path to a new one. I insist on preserving full artistic freedom, both stylistically and formally. Only in this way can I convey what appears essential to me in each moment.
The different modes of expression, heterogeneous as they may seem at first glance, are always connected through me as their creator. Everything bears my signature, my visual logic, my struggle for expression. “The Third Gaze” makes clear that art is not a static system but an open field of experience. It invites reflection, pause, and questioning. Questions that do not necessarily demand answers, but rather open space for new perspectives, visions, and that which has not yet been conceived.
